Vettel: as tight as last year

The German is -so far- pleased with the RB9.

February 7th, 2013 (F1plus Team).- The third day of action at Jerez saw three-time champion Sebastian Vettel to end with the –of course- third best time.

We all know it is very early to judge, make a prognosis, guess, etc, and so Vettel went ahead and right way predicted that the 2013 Formula 1 season will be a tough one as all teams seemed to have upped their game.

"It might be that there is a favorite after these three tests, but it could turn out to be completely the opposite in Australia because it's a different track, a different characteristic," Vettel said.

"I expect it to be at least as tight as last year, the regulations haven't really changed, so it's difficult to make up a lot of ground and equally if you're at the front it's difficult to find something else that makes you a lot quicker.

Vettel finished the session with a best lap time of 1:19.052, a full second and a quarter slower than today’s fastest, Felipe Massa.

Nevertheless, for Vettel these times does not reflect much since there’s still a long way to go for the first race in Australian soil.

“In terms of the times, it’s always nice to be on top, but if there’s one phase of the year where it matters least, it’s here. Now is the time to do our homework. It’s good for us to do a lot of laps, to see that the car is working well and we’ll go from there.”

"So far, I think we can be pretty happy. Mark had a good two days to start with and I took over today. It was about clearing the rust and getting back in shape. So it felt good to be out there and good to be back in the car.

As for the RB9, the German considers it to be a step forward, and he seems pleased with its performance in spite of having just one hands-on experience with it.

“I think the car is working very good; obviously it's difficult to judge the speed but in terms of reliability it looked pretty good and I also feel pretty happy with the car so far." Vettel added.
