Guiterrez remains optimistic for Sunday’s race, despite having an unsatisfactory first qualifying session.

The first qualifying session of the Australian Grand Prix was marred by heavy rain, which ultimately led to the postponement of the second and third qualifying sessions.

This does not affect Sauber driver Esteban Guiterrez however, as he failed to qualify for the next session due to an untimely crash. He will start 18th on the grid after posting a fastest time of 1:47.776.

Guiterrez felt sorrow more than anything however, stating:

“I feel sorry for the team, we had really good pace in these conditions.”

Despite the conditions and his crash, the Mexican driver still managed to remain upbeat and optimistic for Sunday’s race.

“I think we need to look forward. I, personally feel great with the car, good confidence in these conditions, so we have to keep working and looking forward to it.”

The Sauber F1 team can still draw many positives out of the first qualifying sessions however, especially since Guiterrez’ teammate, Nico Hulkenberg will be appearing in at least the second qualifying session.

Q2 will commence at 11.00am local time, in most likely dry conditions. Melbourne’s forecast for tomorrow is 20 degrees centigrade with the chance of 3 millimetres maximum of rain.
