Mixed emotions at Force India after qualifying

Both drivers had hoped to appear in Q3, however, only Di Resta was capable of this on Sunday morning.

March 17th, 2013 (F1Plus / Jacob Polychronis) - Emotions are mixed within the Force India garage this afternoon, as only one of their drivers will be starting the race from inside the top ten. Paul Di Resta will begin from 9th position after posting a time of 1:29.305. AdrianSutil however, will commence from 12th place, after bowing out in Q2 with a time of 1:38.134.

Sutil had been confident of participating in Q3 after practice on Friday. Unfortunately for the 30 year old, he was unable to deliver, missing out on the final qualifying session by a comfortable 0.6 seconds. Sutil lamented a difficult session after the completion of Q2:

“It was a very hard first qualifying. Starting from yesterday, you never knew what was going to happen. Just the level of nervousness you had for a long time was quite exhausting. So today it was much better to drive, as the conditions were good.

"I wasn’t so comfortable in the car. It got better and better every run but I still can improve myself and be a little bit quicker next time.”

Regardless of the disappointment, Sutil is still quietly confident of a good finish considering the race will be dry:

“In the dry I’m very good, I’m feeling good, so 12th position is not bad. [We are] close to the top 10 and that is really the main goal. I think we can really go to the front.”

His British team-mate, Di Resta, in contrast was very pleased with his qualifying result. Di Resta explained how an appropriate tyre choice led to his appearance in Q3:

“There were points in Q2 where the team was asking me should we go to slicks and I didn’t feel it was ready. It was the right decision. We decided to stop and put a fresh set of inters on and that was probably the key point to get through.

"We can be fairly happy with where we qualified. – We’ve beaten McLaren, we’ve got ourselves on the clean side of the grid so really we will be happy for the next 4 or 5 hours before the race. We just need to maximise what we can and get the points that we need to.”

Despite trailing Sutil for all of Friday’s practice, it is Di Resta that is poised to draw first blood over his team-mate. The sun is currently shining in Melbourne however, so as Sutil suggested, the dry conditions may favour him.
