Hamilton gets grid penalty for gearbox change

A tyre failure at the end of FP3 caused damage to the rear of Hamilton's car, which resulted in a gearbox change
Saturday, April 20, 2013

April 20th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Lewis Hamilton has joined the ranks of those with grid penalties this weekend in Bahrain, after his Mercedes team changed his gearbox after the end of Free Practice 3. The change was needed after a left-rear tyre failure caused damage to the rear-end of the car at the end of this morning's practice session.

Under the regulations, each driver must use the same gearbox for five consecutive events. Any unscheduled gearbox changes result in a five-place grid penalty for the driver.

As this is the fourth Grand Prix of the season, and Hamilton has had a gearbox change, he has been handed a five-place grid penalty by the stewards. Hamilton is now the third driver to have a grid penalty for this weekend's race - Esteban Gutierrez has a five-place penalty after taking Adrian Sutil out of the Chinese Grand Prix last week, and Mark Webber has a three-place grid penalty after his car lost a wheel on track last Sunday.
