Ricciardo tops wet first practice at Silverstone

Typically wet British weather meant only half the field completed timed laps in FP1
Friday, June 28, 2013

June 28th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Rain, rain and more rain seems to be the order of the day at Silverstone. The first practice session was characterised by huge plumes of spray being thrown up behind the few cars that spent time on track. Only 11 drivers set lap times, and the quickest of those was Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo.

There was very little point in running in the wet, as both qualifying and the race are expected to take place in dry conditions. However, given that this afternoon's second session is also likely to be wet, the teams are stuck in quite a difficult situation: They need to spend time on track in order to collect data that can help with their setup choices, but there is a limit to how useful wet running will be in that regard.

Wet weather driving also carries significant risk of damage to the cars, as Charles Pic found out when he went off at the final corner and took the front wing off his Caterham against the barrier.

Ricciardo was the first driver to set a timed lap, which he completed in just over two minutes, and the Toro Rosso driver went on to complete more laps - 10 - than anyone else in the sodden session.

For a while, Lewis Hamilton took the top spot away from him, but ultimately Ricciardo found some extra pace and ended the 90 minutes at the top of the time sheet.

However, there really is nothing to be gained from analyzing the times, due to the extreme wet conditions and the lack of running by most of the top drivers - the Red Bull, Lotus, Force India and McLaren drivers did not bother to complete a timed lap between them, and Kimi Raikkonen did not leave the pits at all.
