Sauber's Matt Morris heading to McLaren

Sauber's chief designer will work in McLaren's engineering drawing office
Friday, June 28, 2013

Jun.28 (F1Plus / GMM) McLaren on Friday confirmed that Sauber's departing chief designer Matt Morris is now headed to the Woking based team.

Speed Week earlier reported that Morris, who previously worked for Cosworth and Williams, had tendered his resignation, apparently after receiving an offer from another team. McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh confirmed to broadcaster Sky on Friday: "He (Morris) is coming to McLaren.

"Matt is coming to head our engineering drawing office. It is probably something for Sauber to announce but I am not going to deny it," he added.

McLaren's appointment of Morris comes in the wake of the departure of Paddy Lowe, who was tecnhical director at McLaren before departing for Mercedes. Lowe was visible in the Mercedes pit garage today during free practice for the British Grand Prix.

The German-language Speed Week, Blick and Auto Motor und Sport report that Briton Morris, 39, will be replaced by a deputy at the Hinwil based team, Eric Gandelin, a Frenchman who has been head of concept design.

Gandelin will reportedly start work on 1 July, becoming the third Sauber designer in as many years, in the wake of Morris and James Key before him.

Meanwhile, Sauber team boss Monisha Kaltenborn revealed she "expects" the team to stay with Ferrari power in 2014 as F1 moves from V8 to turbo V6 engines. Nothing has, however, been confirmed.
