Massa "disappointed" after yet another crash

Ferrari's Felipe Massa crashed for the third time in four race weekends, bringing his FP2 session to a premature end
Friday, June 28, 2013

June 28th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Felipe Massa seems to have developed a bit of a crashing habit. At the Monaco Grand Prix last month, he crashed in practice and then again in the race. In Canada three weeks ago, he crashed in wet conditions in practice. Today at a damp Silverstone, Massa lost control of his Ferrari and slid to the scene of his fourth F1 accident in just over a month.

The crash was a little unfortunate, in that Massa's car ended up against the barrier on the inside of the circuit after oversteering on a damp patch of track on the exit of the quick Stowe corner. Normally, a car would be expected to spin or slide off the track on the outside of the corner, which in this case would have resulted in little or no damage as there is a run-off area on the exit of Stowe. But Massa caught the slide once the car was already headed towards the inside barrier and there was nothing he could do from that point but wait for the impact.

Massa expressed his feelings about the day's events: “I am very disappointed about what happened today as the accident cost me valuable time, especially in terms of getting an understanding of the tyre behaviour here at Silverstone. At the exit of the corner, I found myself on a piece of track that was still very damp and I lost control of the car: at that time, the prototype Hard Pirellis that we could use today were not yet up to temperature and I couldn’t avoid the impact. Luckily, the car only suffered slight front end damage and tomorrow we will comfortably be able to pick up where we left off with the work."

Despite his accident-marred day, Massa was upbeat about Ferrari's chances for the rest of the weekend, based partly on the performance of his team-mate's car: "On a long run, Fernando’s car went well and even if the low temperatures probably didn’t help, the improved weather expected tomorrow gives us reason to be optimistic. I am certain that together we will try our best to improve so that we can take the fight to our main rivals."
