Hulkenberg scrapes a point for Sauber

After a strong performance in qualifying, Sauber were hoping for more than a solitary point, but their strategy was adversely affected by the safety car
Sunday, July 7, 2013

July 7th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Nico Hulkenberg was looking for more than just one point at the German Grand Prix after qualifying in the top ten for only the third time this season. But it was not to be, as Hulklenberg's race strategy was compromised by the timing of the safety car that appeared after Jules Bianchi's Marussia stopped on track with a blown engine. Nonetheless, Hulkenberg managed to fight his way into tenth position on the second last lap, and held on for a single point, his seventh point of the season.

Hulkenberg's team-mate, Esteban Gutierrez, also suffered as a result of the emergence of the safety car. Both Sauber drivers had pitted in the few laps before the safety car was deployed, which meant they did not have the advantage, like their rivals, of pitting early in the safety car period which would have saved them quite a bit of time.

Despite their disadvantage with the timing of the safety car, both Sauber drivers managed to recover to their starting positions, Hulkenberg finishing tenth with Gutierrez 14th. Gutierrez has yet to finish in the points in his debut season of Formula One. The German Grand Prix was perhaps his best opportunity to score points so far this season, but circumstances were against him.

Hulkenber has scored all seven of Sauber's points in 2013 and currently lies 15th in the Drivers' Championship. Sauber are 8th in the Constructors' Championship, last of the teams to have scored points this season.

Team principal Monisha Kaltenborn expressed her confidence ahead of the next race in Hungary: "We move on to the test in Silverstone and to the next Grand Prix with confidence. We were able to improve, particularly in qualifying, and we want to continue to improve."
