August 25th, 2013 (F1plus).- For sure, McLaren aspirations for a race win are all but dim; however, a podium finish is getting within sight as Jenson Button finished sixth while stood at third at some point. More than anything, the MP4-28 showed a good pace.
Actually, Button’s points collected today helped to overtake Force India in the standing for 5th overall, which will probably be as high as they could be this year, since Lotus is more than a hundred of points away.
“We were trying for a one-stop strategy at the start of the race, then we adapted that to a two-stopper later on.” Said Button.
A progress was seen, but it was fair also too admit that the Mp4-24 is not there yet.
“Our pace still wasn’t quite as good as that of the cars in front of us, so we couldn’t really chase them down at the end of the race.” He added.
At the end, Button considers even though the usual top form seen from McLaren is not there yet –and probably won’t this year- there are reason to feel more confident.
“In terms of performance there’s been a small but definite improvement, so we should be pleased with the progress we’ve made.
“I’m pretty happy with the feel of the car now, in fact; okay, there’s still room for improvement in terms of pace, but the good thing is that we know which areas we should be focusing on.” The Briton concluded.
The second McLaren car, driver by Sergio Perez could not make it to the points zone as 11th was the best he could do.
“My race started pretty well. I managed to make up a couple of positions at the start, and then a few more in the first 10 laps, and at that point things were looking pretty good. I was happy with the balance of the car and we were on a good strategy.” Said Perez.
The Mexican partly attributes his end position to a penalty given because of his race incident –if we can call it like that- with Romain Grosjean from Lotus.
“Then came the drive-through, and after that it was always going to be tricky to score any points.
“What happened with Romain [Grosjean] was unfortunate. I got ahead of him, and took the corner, but I now understand where the penalty came from, even if I’m naturally disappointed for myself and for the team. “ The mexican concluded.
