Reprimands for Alonso and Webber

The stewards determined that both Alonso and Webber breached the regulations after the race had finished and handed each a reprimand
Sunday, September 22, 2013

September 22nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - After the end of the Singapore Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso stopped on track to gift Mark Webber a lift back to the pits. While this was an entertaining and positive public display of friendship, it also attracted the attention of the the stewards, who determined that both drivers had breached the regulations.

It wasn't that drivers are forbidden to give each other lifts on their slow-down laps. The problem was the manner in which they went about it.

For obvious safety reasons, no-one may enter the track without the permission of the marshals. Mark Webber had left the track when his car broke down on the final lap. He then proceeded onto the track on foot, against the instructions of the marshals, to accept a lift from Alonso. The marshals handed Webber a reprimand for his infringement.

By their very nature, street circuits have blind corners. So it seems quite bizarre that Fernando Alonso stopped his Ferrari in the middle of the track just after he rounded turn 7 on his slow-down lap after the race. His intentions may have been noble - he just wanted to give Webber a lift - but he very nearly caused a pile-up. Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton came around the corner shortly afterwards and had to take swift evasive action. The stewards handed Alonso a reprimand for causing that dangerous situation.

Unfortunately for Mark Webber, this is his third reprimand of the season, and that means that he will receive a 10-place grid penalty for the next race in Korea.
