Penalties for Pic, Bianchi and Sutil

Charles Pic, Jules Bianchi and Adrian Sutil have each received grid penalties for the Japanese Grand Prix. Pic also has a unique extra penalty for the race.

October 12th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - 3 grid penalties have been applied after qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix. Charles Pic and Jules Bianchi each have a 10-place grid penalty, while Adrian Sutil has a 5-place penalty.

In the case of Pic and Bianchi, they came into the weekend knowing they would have 10-place penalties after each received a third reprimand of the season at last weekend's Korean race.

Sutil's penalty was incurred as a result of a gearbox change following his crash in Free Practice 3 in Japan.

Oddly, the penalties seem to have been applied such that Sutil ends up behind Pic and Bianchi on the grid, despite having qualified ahead of both and having a smaller penalty than the other two drivers. Sutil will start 22nd, with Bianchi 21st and Pic 20th.

Pic faces a unique situation in tomorrow's race. He has been handed a drive-through penalty for exiting the pits during the first part of qualifying when the light at the end of the pit-lane was red after the session had been stopped. Pic is required to serve his penalty within 5 laps of the start of the race. This is the first time a driver has ever been given a drive-through penalty the day before the start of a Grand Prix.
