October 27th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in Formula One history, has congratulated Sebastian Vettel on winning his fourth World Drivers' Championship.
A message on Schumacher's website, michael-schumacher.de, reads:
"A big compliment and many congratulations to Sebastian – terrific performance from him and his team, cool year, he really deserves this fourth title!"
Schumacher and Vettel have, between them, won 11 World Drivers' Championships, and they are the only drivers to have won the title while racing under the German flag.
Vettel's first three titles were achieved in 2010, 2011 and 2012, the three seasons of Schumacher's comeback to Formula One. Their history goes back much further than that, however. When Schumacher was World Champion with Benetton in 1995, he presented a karting trophy to an eight-year old Sebastian Vettel. Neither of them could have known back then that Schumacher would dominate Formula One to the extent that he did, or that Vettel would follow so magnificently in his footsteps.
Vettel broke yet another of Schumacher's records by taking the title in India. At just 26 years of age, Vettel is now the youngest ever four-time World Champion, beating the previous record set by Schumacher when he was 32 years old.
