Sutil blames Maldonado for first lap crash

Adrian Sutil and Pastor Maldonado made contact on the first lap in Austin, causing Sutil to crash heavily and damaging Maldonado's front wing
Sunday, November 17, 2013

November 17th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Adrian Sutil's United States Grand Prix was over almost as soon as it had begun, with a high-speed crash on the back straight on lap one putting him out of the race.

Sutil and Maldonado were running side by side down the back straight when their tyres touched and Sutil's car spun out of control and into the barriers. Maldonado sustained damage to his front wing which caused him to make an early pit stop and effectively ruined his race strategy.

After the race, Sutil was adamant that Maldonado was to blame for the incident. Sutil explained his frustration with his US Grand Prix weekend:

“It feels like I ran out of luck this weekend. Up until Saturday morning I was looking competitive and was happy with the car, but all of that promise disappeared with the problems we had in qualifying.

"In the race I made a good start, gained a few positions and was racing ahead of Maldonado on the back straight. For some reason he hit my left rear wheel and I immediately lost control of the car and crashed into the barriers.

"I don’t really understand why he was so close to me because the track is so wide there. I stayed on my line and there was a lot of space to the right and the left. So it was an early finish and a very disappointing day.”

In the other Force India, Paul Di Resta had a tough afternoon, finishing 16th from 11th on the grid.
