Paul Hembery: first day at Interlagos was an opportunity lost

Pirelli’s motorsport boss admits that it would be important to compare the 2014 tyres with the current ones at Interlagos

Interlagos, BRAZIL, November 22nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Bruno Ferreira) - The first day of action of the Brazilian GP was not as fruitful as Pirelli hoped it to be. The heavy rain that fell at Interlagos throughout the two free practices prevented the teams from trying for the first time one of the compounds that will be used in 2014.

In a press conference this Friday, which was attended by F1Plus, Pirelli’s motorsport boss Paul Hembery said that the day was a little bit frustrating. “We would not have brought them [the tyres] here if we didn’t want to run them, so it’s an opportunity lost. That’s life as it’s the weather”, he said. “The real reason we wanted to do it is to have a benchmark against this year’s tyres with the new compound to give us a scaling.”

He reckons, however, that it is unlikely that the teams will ask to try the tyres in the third practice on Saturday morning if it doesn’t rain. “We would probably need an agreement from 11 teams. Everybody knows that is not going to happen. The tyres are there. If they want to use them we are happy so that’s the only thing we can say.”

As a result of Friday's rain, the only running on the 2014 tyre was a few very slow laps by Sebastian Vettel in the wet FP1 session, which hardly provides a representative comparison of the 2013 and 2014 compounds.
