“Magnussen deserves McLaren seat” says former teammate Nasr

The 2011 British F3 champion thinks that Kevin Magussen is strong enough to become a race driver in a top F1 team

Interlagos, BRAZIL, November 24th, 2013 (F1Plus / Bruno Ferreira) - Kevin Magnussen’s former teammate Felipe Nasr believes that the young Danish driver deserved to be promoted to McLaren next year.

Magnussen, 21 years old, will replace Sergio Perez in the British team after dominating the Formula Renault 3.5 series with five victories in the 2013 season. Nasr, who raced alongside him at Carlin in 2011 in British Formula 3, praised Magnussen’s skills.

“Kevin has always been involved with McLaren so it was expected he would have an opportunity. He deserves it. We were teammates at Carlin and I won the title beating him. He has always been a quick guy, very competitive. He really deserves it,” he told F1plus.

Brazilian Nasr, fourth in the 2013 GP2 season, said he’s working to get a seat in F1 regardless if it’s as race or reserve driver. However, he doesn’t rule out another year in the feeder series.

“I need to look at every alternative. The initial plan was to make just two years in GP2, but we are even considering doing a third one. But I think it’s too much,” he reckons.

“Davide Valsecchi and Fabio Leimer won the title in their fourth, fifth year in GP2, but what for? They spent too much time in GP2 and that can hamper the negotiations.”
