Grosjean: 'Eleventh place is good'

The Frenchman says loss of downforce in the rear prevented him from finishing higher.

March 30, 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) Romain Grosjean finished the Malaysian Grand Prix in 11th place, a position he says is ‘good’ for himself and the team.

“Eleventh place is good for all the guys at Enstone and at the track, and it's good for me too.” he said.

“Finishing the race was our first objective and then we wanted to see where we were with our car. It's not perfect yet but it's good to be where we are at this stage.”

He felt a loss of downforce in the rear of the E22 towards the end of the race prevented him from pushing and moving into the points.

“I had a big loss of downforce around eight laps to the end especially in the rear of the car which made things difficult, especially when I had to defend.

“Without that issue, I’m sure we could have finished higher.”

Grosjean found himself battling with former teammate Kimi Raikkonen towards the end of the race but was able to hold him off by thinking about his previous fights with the Finn.

“It was a good battle at the end. I kept remembering our past battles to make sure Kimi couldn't go through!” Grosjean said.

Pastor Maldonado didn’t have quite such a good race and was involved in an incident with Jules Bianchi early on. He was forced to retire on lap seven to protect his engine after the team spotted an issue with the turbo intake system.

“After the start we were losing a lot of power so we'll have to investigate later to see what the issue is and analyse the data.” Maldonado said.

“This problem meant I had to retire in order to protect the engine.”

Though he was unable to complete the race, the Venezuelan remained positive and said the team had learnt a lot.

“Despite that, this weekend has been clearly a step forwards.”

“we have learnt a lot this weekend and will make progress for the next.”

Lotus are currently ninth in the constructors’ championship with zero points.
