21 April, 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Lewis Hamilton is making it harder and harder for me to not announce him as my driver of the day.
As I’ve said before though, while Hamilton is doing a splendid job so far this year, I always feel the driver of the day award should go to a driver who performed so much better than expected.
Hamilton did do a stellar job and absolutely dominated the race but it was expected. His teammate Nico Rosberg also did a great job, especially considering he had no telemetry during the race.
Daniel Ricciardo performed well and given a few extra laps would have been challenging for third place. He really is doing a good job of showing exactly what Red Bull Racing saw in him and why they decided to hire him.
Valtteri Bottas also put in another strong performance, helping Williams to begin closing the gap to McLaren in the constructors’ championship.
After struggling so far this season, Fernando Alonso is my driver of the day. The Spaniard had a strong start, bounced back from contact with Felipe Massa and stood on the podium for the first time this year.
Alonso dedicated his third place finish to former Team Principal Stefano Domenicali as he said the way the team performs up until July is a result of his work.
“I think this podium should be dedicated to Stefano, as everything we do up to July will also be the result of his efforts.” Alonso said.
“After a difficult start to the season, this podium is a confidence boost for the whole team, providing extra motivation for all those who are doing their best to close the gap to the front.”
