Chilton: no doubt that we're closer to Sauber

Chilton and Bianchi believe they are closing the gap to Sauber.

BARCELONA, 11th May 2014 - (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Max Chilton says he has no doubt that Marussia are pulling away from Caterham and closing in on the Saubers and a chance at Q2.

The Briton will start the Spanish Grand Prix 18th, ahead of teammate Jules Bianchi.

“That session showed we have made a step forward with our new developments,” Chilton said.

“there’s no doubt that we are closer to the Saubers - and to Q2 contention - and we’ve pulled away from the Caterhams by a good margin.”

“there was definitely more to come from the car, so I’m pretty optimistic for the race tomorrow. I think we can have a good fight.”

Bianchi qualified 19th after his second fast lap was ruined when he ran wide at Turn 10. He too shared the view that Marussia were closing in on Saubers and Q2.

“My second quick lap was really coming together and I had gained a lot of time in the first two sectors, but I braked too late into turn 10 and ran wide.” Bianchi said.

“I was just pushing a bit too hard, but we had the car and today we could have been close to a place in Q2, so we had everything to push for.”

“we have made a good performance step towards the Saubers and we can really focus on the cars ahead now, not those behind.”

This weekend the Marussia’s have looked much stronger than main rivals Caterham, who have been struggling for grip.
