14th May 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - After a weekend of glorious sunshine, the rain fell in Spain as day one of the two day test got underway.
It will come as no surprise to anyone that Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets in the morning, but the fastest lap of the afternoon and the day came courtesy of Max Chilton.
The poor weather meant the morning’s running ended an hour earlier than planned at 12PM local time to give the teams an extra hour of running in the afternoon when it was hoped the track would be drier.
Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap of the morning, a 1:44.291 on the damp and cool Circuit de Catalunya and got 27 laps under his belt.
Felipe Massa was second fastest in the Williams, completing 19 laps and putting in a fastest time of 1:45.089.
Sebastien Buemi drove for Red Bull and going third fastest and put in 23 laps.
Jenson Button went fourth fastest, followed by Nico Hulkenberg, Max Chilton and Kamui Kobayashi, who put in 26 laps.
Giedo van der Garde was back in the Sauber and went eighth fastest.
Former Caterham driver Charles Pic was in the Lotus but didn’t set a timed lap.
Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne’s bad luck continued and he broke down on both trips onto the circuit, bringing out two red flags.
Kimi Raikkonen was unable to set a timed lap either after stopping out on the circuit halfway through the morning.
The circuit began drying out in the afternoon, though that didn’t last too long as the rain put in another appearance.
Chilton set the fastest lap of the afternoon and the day five minutes before the end of the session with a 1:26.434.
Hamilton was third fastest in the Mercedes, which hasn’t yet tested the adjusted exhaust.
Raikkonen was finally able to do some running in the afternoon and went fourth fastest, though he did end up in the gravel.
After a stop-start morning, Vergne went fifth fastest in the Toro Rosso, followed by Hulkenberg, Massa and Button.
Kobayashi’s afternoon came to an early end after he ran off at Turn 3 and hit the barriers.
Buemi’s afternoon came to a premature end and he ended the afternoon
van der Garde was 11th fastest after setting a lap time of 1:31.783, though he did put in more laps than anyone else, doing 86 laps.
