22nd June, 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Nico Rosberg won the Austrian Grand Prix from teammate Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
The German driver took his third win of the year at the Austrian Grand Prix’s return to Formula One.
He made a great start and had to wait until lap 28th to take the lead. A pit stop on lap 40 saw him drop back to fourth place but he returned to the lead a few laps later.
Rosberg had to manage a brake issue throughout the race and performed well under pressure from teammate Hamilton towards the end of the race.
Hamilton was also managing a brake issue and began closing in on Rosberg in the last few laps but didn’t have enough time left to take the lead and finished second.
Bottas started second and drove a clean race and finished third to take his first Formula One podium finish.
Teammate Felipe Massa started on pole but missed out on the podium and finished fourth.
Fernando Alonso led the race for a few laps before making his second stop and ended up crossing the line fifth.
Another strong race for Sergio Perez, who led the race at one point, and finished sixth picking up a handful of points for Force India, ahead of Kevin Magnussen.
What a difference a couple of weeks makes for Daniel Ricciardo who struggled throughout the weekend and finished eighth.
Nico Hulkenberg and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the points, crossing the line ninth and tenth respectively.
Jenson Button performed well during the first half of the race but missed out on a points finish by 3.1 seconds.
Pastor Maldonado finished 12th, which is his best finish of the year.
Adrian Sutil finished 13th followed by Romain Grosjean.
Jules Bianchi was the highest finishing out of the Marussia’s and Caterham’s, crossing the line 15th followed by Kamui Kobayashi, Max Chilton, Marcus Ericsson and Esteban Gutierrez.
Jean-Eric Vergne retired on lap 60 with a brake issue.
After a tough weekend Sebastian Vettel had a torrid race day, losing drive a couple of laps in. Drive returned a lap later but he spent the rest of the race at the back of the grid.
He later made contact with Gutierrez and was forced to stop for a new front wing and retired on lap 37 to save engine mileage.
Daniil Kvyat suffered his third retirement in a row after suffering a suspension failure, a right rear puncture and added that he thought the brakes had failed. At the time of writing the team had not given an official reason for his retirement.
