Mercedes top FP1 time sheets in Silverstone

Rosberg finished the session fastest with teammate Hamilton second
Friday, July 4, 2014

SILVERSTONE, 4th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Mercedes continued to prove they’re the fastest cars on the grid by topping the timesheets during the first practice session of the British Grand Prix weekend.

Nico Rosberg was fastest overall after setting a lap of 1:35.424, followed by Lewis Hamilton who was 0.731s slower.

Both Ferrari’s put in a decent showing with Fernando Alonso third fastest overall and Kimi Raikkonen fifth.

Daniel Ricciardo was fourth fastest overall and Sebastian Vettel was sixth fastest just behind Raikkonen.

Jenson Button was seventh fastest, with Daniil Kvyat in eighth and his teammate Jean-Eric Vergne ninth. Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10.

11th fastest was Sergio Perez with Romain Grosjean close behind.

Esteban Gutierrez was the fastest Sauber and finished 13th with reserve driver Giedo van der Garde 15th.

Force India reserve driver Daniel Juncadella was the fastest of the four reserve drivers taking part in the session, finishing the session 14th.

Jules Bianchi finished 16th followed by Felipe Massa, whose session ended early.

Felipe Massa crashed at Stowe after losing it on the curbs, in a repeat of a similar incident he had last year at Silverstone in the Ferrari. The crash red flagged the session and ended the morning’s running for Massa.

In 18th was Max Chilton, who was heard complaining of oversteer during the session.

Marcus Ericsson beached his car on the inside of turn 13 after running across the grass, ending his session with half an hour to go and finished the session 19th fastest.

Robin Frijns was in the Caterham for the second time on a Friday this year, replacing Kamui Kobayashi.

The Dutchman had an electrical issue during the session which meant he spent some time in the garage. With 10 minutes to go he was finally able to set a timed lap and ended FP1 20th overall.

Susie Wolff stepped in for Valtteri Bottas in FP1 but her session came to a halt after four laps after reporting an issue with oil pressure.

When she returned to the Williams garage she was told ‘It’s terminal, the engine’s gone.’.

The retirement of both of their drivers during the session, means that Williams only managed 11 laps in total, so the team will be hoping for good running during FP2 to get the data they need.

Pastor Maldonado’s session came to an early end after a couple of installation laps and was unable to set a timed lap during the session.

The Lotus driver got stuck at the end of the pitlane while trying to do practice starts and was pushed back up the pitlane.
