Perez: wind and lack of downforce affecting us

Teammate Hulkenberg believes they can improve for tomorrow

SILVERSTONE, 4th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Sergio Perez says the wind and lack of downforce is hurting Force India.

The Mexican driver, who was 11th fastest in FP1 and 16th in FP2, said the day had been harder than expected.

“Yeah, it’s been a tough day in the business. We expected that Silverstone was going to be a difficult one for us but it was more difficult than expected and really not good enough.” Perez said.

“We’re having big issues with the car, big inconsistencies so we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us to try and solve most of it and hopefully tomorrow we can get a lot closer in qualifying.”

“I think lack of downforce and the wind is affecting us quite a bit and it’s hurting us.” Perez said when asked what the ‘big issues’ were with the car.

“You need a lot of efficiency in your car in this place and we don’t have that at the moment. So I expect a difficult weekend. Hopefully we get a good few points out of here, [that] will be a great weekend for us.”

Perez has previously been critical of Pirelli for their tyre choices and felt they had been quite conservative with the tyre choices for the British Grand Prix.

“I think we went conservative here. Especially when you look at what we’re going to use in Germany, the softs and supersofts, I think we could have got away with soft and medium.” he said.

Teammate Nico Hulkenberg agreed with Perez that the wind was causing an issue for them and added that they needed to understand more about the tyres but felt the team could improve.

“I think it’s a bit wind related I guess, I didn’t run the car in the morning but straight away it was pretty tricky and a bit unpredictable to drive with these conditions.” Hulkenberg said.

“Wind is never good for a racing car especially when it’s so gusty and so strong. Racing cars don’t like that, it makes it hard for the aero[dynamics] to stay healthy.”

“I think we can improve for tomorrow you know by understanding tyre management, where we run them, what temperatures etc, I think there’s a bit more to come.”
