SILVERSTONE, 5th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Felipe Massa says a long stop in the garage to change tyres was the reason that both Williams cars failed to make it out of Q1.
Massa and Valtteri Bottas qualified at the back of the grid for the team’s home race after waiting until the very end of Q1 to go back out.
“We lost maybe a minute and a half, and it started raining in the middle of the out-lap, so a minute before it would have been OK.” he said.
When asked why they took so long, the Brazilian suggested that they took it ‘easy’.
“I think we just took it easy. Maybe we didn’t react so quick.” he said when asked why it took so long to change the tyres.”
“We didn’t make the right strategy today. We made a mistake definitely and we lost the opportunity to start in the position we’re supposed to start. For sure it was not a good decision what we did today.”
The Brazilian driver qualified 18th but will start his 200th race 15th after penalties have been applied, with his teammate ahead of him in 14th.
Massa suggested that Williams need to take risks tomorrow to pick up points.
“For sure I mean when you start in the back, I thought it was 18 but maybe 15, 16 because two drivers have penalties, when you start like that you cannot take any conservative approach.” he said.
“We need to try to our damage limitation, to do something better you need to risk everything we can to score points.”
