SILVERSTONE, 6th July 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Lotus say an exhaust problem ended Pastor Maldonado's race on the 49th lap.
The Enstone based team weren’t sure of the exact cause and couldn’t say for sure whether or not it was caused by his collision with Esteban Gutierrez earlier in the race. After the race the stewards decided Gutierrez was at fault and gave him a three place grid penalty for the upcoming German Grand Prix.
Though Maldonado did not cross the finish line, he was classified as finishing in 17th place.
“Pastor suffered from an exhaust problem at the end of his race so we’ll investigate the cause of that, especially as he was involved in contact with another car during the course of the race.” said Alan Permane, Trackside Operations Director.
Maldonado said the initial start was strong for him but they struggled after the restart.
“My first start felt good but after the restart we struggled for power so I wasn’t able to fight with the cars around me. I still pushed as best I could but making progress was difficult.” he said.
In contrast his teammate, Romain Grosjean, had a poor first start and a stronger restart and finished 12th, 10 seconds out of the points.
“It was a difficult first start to the race for me. I had a switch problem which meant limited power, but despite that we had a good first lap.” said Grosjean.
“I avoided the incident with Kimi, but my visor did get damaged by some debris. The restart went pretty well for me and the car felt alright.”
