Booth: Chilton lost out in qualifying due to an electrical issue

Marussia's team principal says he missed out on valuable set up time.

19th July, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Marussia’s team principal John Booth says an electrical issue put Max Chilton on the back foot in qualifying.

Booth says an electrical issue at the end of FP3 cost Chilton valuable setup time which meant he went into qualifying with a disadvantage.

Chilton qualified 21st, 0.081s behind Caterham’s Kamui Kobayashi.

“Unfortunately, with Max, we lost some track time due to an electronics issue,” Booth said.

“This was very unfortunate for him because he missed out on experiencing the finalised setup on the option tyres at the end of FP3.

“Into qualifying this meant that Max was definitely on the back foot and lost out to Kobayashi, almost certainly because of this.”

Booth feels they cannot match the pace of Sauber this weekend but feels they are slightly closer to Lotus.

“Overall it seems that the changes this weekend have benefited the Saubers, so we are not quite on their pace,” he said.

“However, we do seem slightly closer to the Lotus cars and having still maintained our advantage over Caterham.

“There’s a mixed forecast for the race tomorrow but either way our target is to try to progress from our qualifying position.”

Chilton’s teammate Jules Bianchi qualified 18th.
