Friday, August 22, 2014

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 22nd, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Nico Rosberg drew first blood at the glorious Spa-Francorchamps as Formula One returned from the summer break.

The Mercedes driver completed the most laps, 25, and filed a lap time of 1:51.557.

Teammate Lewis Hamilton followed close behind and was just 0.097s slower.

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button had a strong session, finishing third and fourth respectively.

Kimi Raikkonen was fifth fastest overall. Towards the end of the session the Finn had a temperature issue with his ERS but was able to continue with the session.

In sixth place was Force India's Sergio Perez, who says he is aiming for a podium finish at the Belgian and Italian races.

Kevin Magnussen split the Force India's in seventh with Nico Hulkenberg eighth.

The Red Bull's didn't have a particularly strong session with Daniel Ricciardo ninth fastest, followed by Valtteri Bottas and then Sebastian Vettel.

Daniil Kvyat was 12th fastest followed by Romain Grosjean in the Renault powered Lotus.

Felipe Massa was the slowest Mercedes-powered car and was 14th fastest in the Williams.

Jean-Eric Vergne was 15th fastest with a lap time of 1:54.189.

Giedo van der Garde was in the Sauber for the session in Esteban Gutierrez's car. After putting in a total of 12 laps van der Garde ranked 17th fastest.

Pastor Maldonado was 18th fastest overall followed by Jules Bianchi in the Marussia.

Alexander Rossi took part in FP1 in the Marussia in place of Max Chilton and was 20th fastest overall.

It was announced on Thursday that Rossi would replace Chilton all weekend while 'contractual issues' were resolved.

On Friday Marussia made a u-turn and announced that Chilton would race on Sunday and that Rossi would only take part in FP1.

Caterham bought updates to the Belgian Grand Prix, most noticeably a new nose.

That wasn't the only change at Caterham though, Andre Lotterer is in the car this weekend instead of Kamui Kobayashi.

Three time 24-hour Le Mans champion Lotterer completed 24 laps in total and finished 21st fastest overall just ahead of teammate Marcus Ericsson.
