Hulkenberg bemoans wrong tyre strategy

The Force India driver says he failed to reach Q2 because he did not switch to mediums.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 23rd, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Nico Hulkenberg says poor tyre strategy was to blame for him failing to get through to Q2.

The Force India driver qualified 18th for the Belgian Grand Prix, which is his worst qualifying position of the year.

Post-qualifying Hulkenberg said he failed to get through to Q2 because they did not change to medium tyres as the track dried out and lap times dropped.

In the beginning of Q1 we were going quite strongly, comfortably and quick,” Hulkenberg said.

“But we decided as it was going well not to put on a new set of mediums.

“Then everyone began to improve as the track dried out and by that time my tyres had dropped quite a bit of performance and I didn’t have enough to be fast enough.”

The German driver said he also suffered brake issues and felt he may have had a glazed brake, an issue Lewis Hamilton said he suffered from in qualifying.

“Something went wrong with the brakes as well,” he explained. “It might be that we have a glazed brake.”

At the moment it is forecast to be a dry Belgian Grand prix and the Force India driver believes he can make a strong recovery.

“For the race tomorrow I believe we can recover because we’ve got a solid car and the long run pace in the dry yesterday looked promising.”
