Alonso warns rivals over Ferrari pace

Ferrari's team is highly motivated at the moment and it is very confident that this year achievements will get better.

NURBURGRING, Germany, July 21, 2011 (AFP) - Fernando Alonso on Thursday warned that Ferrari's race-winning pace at Silverstone signalled a revival in their competitive speed and made them a genuine threat in this weekend's German Grand Prix.

The two-times world champion Spaniard told reporters that he and his Italian team had not gained thanks only to the controversial rule changes executed during the British Grand Prix weekend. He said: "The rule changes, as we said there, didn't change anything, because it's not like in Valencia we were tenth. We finished second in Valencia and first in Silverstone, so I don't think the rule changes were beneficial for anyone in particular."

Alonso delivered Ferrari's first win of the year in the British race after taking advantage of a bungled Red Bull pit-stop for championship leader Sebastian Vettel. "Yes, the pit-stop problem helped in the race, because it's always harder
to overtake on track. In some races, it's true they passed us during the pit-stops because they were quicker than us -- and this time they were slower and we beat them this time," he said.

"Sometimes they get it right, but in Silverstone they got it wrong."

Alonso added that the German Grand Prix represented a major test for Ferrari to prove they are back in the running as one of the leading teams."We'll have to confirm it here," he said.

"There's no doubt in Silverstone we were a tenth away (in qualifying), but we only had one run and it rained when we were on the second set of tyres. "We don't know if they were holding something back and maybe the gap would have been bigger with the second run.

"We'll see here. Qualifying is important, but the race is where the points are awarded and that's what we focus on."
