June 22nd, 2013 (F1plus).- Renault has unveiled its 2014 1.6 litre V6 Turbo engine to the world, calling it "Energy F1" to show DNA that it shares with Renault's road-going units.
Next season will see the kick starting of a new era for the sport with smaller but similarly powerful engines which are greener and linked more heavily to road and sports car production.
The engine, which was unveiled in Paris yesterday (June 21st), will power Red Bull Racing, Toro Rosso, Caterham and the Lotus F1 Team to hopeful success although the latter two teams mentioned have yet to officially confirm deals.
The power-plants will use 35% less fuel than its predecessor and will actually exceed the power statistics of the previous engine thanks to the new ERS system which is more powerful and will give drivers more of a boost in comparison to current KERS units.
Renault ambassador Alain Prost spoke in a statement from Renault on the unveiling of the new engine, saying: "From 2014 we will bring engines to the fore and redress the balance of F1. An engine is the heart of a car, from next year it returns to the heart of our sport."
Renault Sport F1 President Jean-Michel Janinier said on the announcement: "From next year, one of the greatest challenges in F1 will be to maximise energy efficiency and fuel economy while maintaining the power output and performance expected of F1 cars. Renault has pioneered this technology in its road car engine range with the Energy series.
"Naming the Power Unit 'Energy F1' creates an unbroken range, from the Clio through to our competition department.
"Renault have been dropped by Williams as their engine partner for 2014. One big worry with the new engines is the noise but the French firm released a soundbite which show that the noise is actually better than some - including myself - expected.
